BDO has welcomed a former Santos tax adviser to its Adelaide office, bolstering its ability to guide clients through an increasingly complex regulatory environment.

Last Thursday (30 April), BDO announced it had welcomed former Santos tax adviser Matthew Fregona as a partner in its Adelaide office.

BDO Adelaide managing partner Rudy Pieck said Fregona’s appointment would strengthen the office’s tax advisory capabilities by leveraging his extensive experience in complex tax matters.

“Matthew’s appointment reflects our continued investment in building a leading tax practice in Adelaide,” Pieck said.

“His significant experience gives him a unique perspective that will be highly valuable to our clients, particularly those operating in complex and highly regulated environments.”

Fregona brings over 15 years of experience across professional services and in-house tax functions, advising large corporates and mid-market businesses on complex tax matters, governance frameworks and regulatory risk.

Previously, he worked as a tax adviser at KPMG and as a senior tax analyst at Oz Minerals.

He has worked across corporate income tax advisory, indirect tax, tax governance and regulatory engagement, including supporting firms through cross-border tax matters and ATO reviews.

Fregona said he was drawn to BDO’s collaborative culture and ambitions for growth.

“BDO provides a strong platform to build meaningful client relationships while working in a collaborative and entrepreneurial environment,” he said.

“I’m excited to contribute to the continued growth of the Adelaide tax practice and to work alongside highly respected partners across the firm, while helping clients navigate complex tax challenges with practical, commercially focused solutions.”

Pieck said that Fregona’s appointment would help BDO’s Adelaide office assist their clients in navigating growing regulatory burdens and complex tax rules.

“Matthew’s strong connections within the Adelaide corporate market, along with his deep sector expertise in energy and resources, will further enhance our ability to support clients navigating increasingly complex tax and regulatory landscapes,” he said.

“His appointment also strengthens our ability to deliver proactive, strategic advice that helps organisations manage risk while pursuing growth opportunities.”
