BDO announces David Garvey as CEP and 20 partner promotions

Profession
19 June 2025

The professional services firm has named David Garvey as its new chief executive partner, assuming the role at the end of the year.

BDO has announced the appointment of David Garvey to chief executive partner (CEP), succeeding Tony Schiffman from 1 December 2025.

In addition, BDO also promoted 20 individuals to partner positions effective from 1 July across the key divisions of audit, tax, business services, advisory and shared services.

Ahead of beginning in the CEP role on 1 December, Garvey was set to work closely with Schiffman over the next six months to enable a smooth transition from his current role as office managing partner in Melbourne.

David Fagan, BDO Australia chairman, said Schiffman’s position as CEP was a cornerstone of the firm’s leadership for over 25 years, and the change was an exciting development in the evolution of the firm in Australia.

“I am proud to announce that Mr David Garvey will take up the position of chief executive partner from 1 December 2025. David’s appointment marks a pivotal chapter in BDO’s journey of growth and transformation.”

“David has a proven track record of strategic leadership. Deep sector insight, and a collaborative mindset. He brings a bold vision for BDO in Australia; one that is rooted in people and inclusive culture, powered by innovation, and focused on sustainable impact.”

Schiffman would mentor Garvey as he stepped down from the CEP role, which he has held for over 25 years, and was noted by BDO to be instrumental in nurturing the “unique people-centric culture of the firm”.

Fagan said Schiffman would remain with the firm and would continue his role on the BDO global board, with his leadership impact to continue as Garvey took on the role.

“David will build upon the solid foundation set by Tony. David’s vision is clear. He will continue to position BDO as the most trusted professional services firm in Australia; a firm that leads with purpose, embraces digital transformation, and delivers measurable value to its people, clients and communities alike.”

“Under David’s leadership, we are confident BDO will continue to grow stronger, more connected, and more future-ready than ever.”

The announcement of the CEP position being filled coincided with the promotion of 20 individuals to the position of partner from 1 July 2025.

The promotions across multiple key areas of the firm highlighted the firm’s commitment to nurturing talent and expanding its partner network and came after 13 partners were promoted in January, BDO said.

BDO also welcomed 29 lateral hires drawn from larger global competitors, in addition to appointing 28 new directors effective 1 July.

Schiffman said the various appointments reinforced the strength of BDO’s talent pool and the firm’s dedication to nurturing internal growth.

“We remain committed to nurturing the people that we have at BDO and this announcement of 20 people moving up to the position of partner demonstrates our support of future leaders by providing tangible career development opportunities.”
