carbon group expands in sydney with numeric eight takeover

The bookkeeping and accounts management operation becomes the latest in a string of acquisitions for the Perth-based outfit.

The Carbon Group has taken over Sydney bookkeeping start-up Numeric Eight, adding two offices and 50 staff to its NSW presence.

Numeric Eight director Trudi Yip, who established the firm in 2006, said it was time to move to the next level.

“When I founded Numeric Eight 17 years ago I was determined to build a bookkeeping and accounts management company that did things fundamentally different to the traditional bookkeeping firms I'd experienced previously,” she said.

“Hence our tagline of Beyond Bookkeeping.”

“We have built this business to almost 50 staff based in two offices in Sydney – St Leonards and Parramatta – providing a range of traditional bookkeeping services.”

“However, now is the time for Numeric Eight to move to the next level.”

Carbon said Ms Yip would join as a partner in the firm’s bookkeeping and CFO services division and the Numeric Eight brand would continue in NSW “for a period” to capitalise on its strength.

Carbon Group co-founder Nathan Hood said bookkeeping and CFO services partner Wellington Takakura would assume the leadership role over Numeric Eight and “work closely with Trudi to nurture the client base and the strong referral network that has been built by Numeric Eight”.

“Wellington and I are very excited to partner with Numeric Eight,” he said. “The partnership bolsters our presence in Sydney as well as our bookkeeping and finance outsourcing service lines.”

The Carbon Group has expanded rapidly from its West Australian base over the past nine years and Numeric Eight is just the latest in a string of acquisitions that most recently includes Harding Martin in Ipswich, Queensland, and the Kensington Financial Group in Perth.

Ms Yip said the two firms were a good match.

“Carbon was the obvious choice for several reasons: they are a great cultural fit and share our values and passion with everything we do,” she said.

A top 40 accountant, Carbon Group won Firm of the Year at the Australian Accounting Awards in both 2018 and 2020, and was a finalist in 2021 and 2022.
